Pacific Palms Resort + St. Christopher + Royal Vista Country Club + Susan and Charles

February 6, 2010

A few Saturdays ago I met up with Susan and Charles who were getting ready for their wedding at the Pacific Palms Resort in Industry Hills, California. After everyone got madhotsexy, we met downstairs so I could do my wedding photographer thing. Although we were tight on time, I had an advantage–I already knew most of the bridal party as many of them were also in Max & Hannah’s wedding that I photographed last year (and that’s how Susan and Charles found me). After a few photos at the resort, everyone loaded up for a short drive over to St. Christopher Catholic Church in West Covina. After a beautiful and touching ceremony (many tears were shed), we headed over to Royal Vista Country Club in Walnut. If you’re a friend of the bride and groom and you’d like to see more, click here to see all of the wedding photos.

Dave Youpa of Industry Hills credits everyone at the Los Angeles County golf club for working together to achieve national recognition.

BY CATHERINE RISLINGPublished: January, 2010

Every Wednesday during the school year, Industry Hills PGA Director of Golf Dave Youpa stops by the driving range. They’re not PGA Tour players or celebrities he’s eager to meet. It’s the children from inner-city schools learning the game he loves.

Youpa isn’t the only one at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort who enjoys this part of his job, offering tips whenever he can and encouraging young players to have fun. Just about all of the employees at Industry Hills share Youpa’s enthusiasm.

This is just one reason why Industry Hills was named the 2010 National Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association.

“It’s such an honor for me personally,” said Youpa, who’s seen a lot of changes in his 18 years at the club, including a $65 million renovation two years ago. “Being named best course tells us we’re on the right track. All of our passion and hard work makes this is a huge pat on the back; it means we’re doing a great job and encourages us to keep going.”

Youpa credits everyone from staff to management to the folks at Majestic Realty, which acquired the property in 2000, for the club’s success.

“Our goal has been to provide a golf experience that is unequaled in Los Angeles,” said Majestic Realty co-owner John Semcken. “We want the public pay-to-play customer to have a private country club experience every time they come out to play.”

Starting with the Babe and Ike courses, which were resodded, regraded and rebuilt, the resort experience includes a renovated hotel and new spa, fitness center, pool and fireside dining. The award also recognizes Industry Hills’ environment-friendly efforts, including the updated irrigation system that utilizes recycled water and maximizes water usage. The course also hired a goat herder to clear the hillsides during the renovation.

“Prior to the renovation the courses were getting a little overgrown with thousands of trees,” Youpa said. “We cleared out areas to allow views of the San Gabriel Mountains, and now you can see through to the other holes. It’s become really picturesque yet is still secluded. It’s a 650-acre masterpiece.”

In addition to hosting school children through the Youth Activities League, Industry Hills gives back to the community by raising money through efforts such as the Land of the Free Foundation charity tournament that raised $1 million for the military’s four branches.

Through its women’s club, golf academy and popular junior program, Industry Hills continues to promote the game.

“We have one of the biggest and best men’s clubs, we host hundreds of tournaments a year and we teach golf to players of all ages,” Youpa said. “We have two world-class golf courses and we make it affordable for everyone to play here.”

If you haven’t played Industry Hills, you might have seen it on television or the big screen. Scenes from “Entourage,” “Las Vegas” and “Heroes” have been shot at the club, and in the course’s early days, Industry Hills served as one of the locations for “Caddyshack.”

Industry Hills golf courses named best of the year

INDUSTRY – The Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms has dug itself out of a bunker.

After the golf courses opened in 1980, the former landfill site turned into a losing venture for the city.

Then a pair of Majestic Realty Co. executives came to the rescue. CEO Ed Roski Jr. and Vice President John Semcken stepped in nine years ago, invested millions and now they have a winner.

Last month, the National Golf Course Owners Association named the Industry Hills Golf Club the 2010 “Golf Course of the Year.”

“We’re excited and honored,” said director of golf Dave Youpa. “To us, it’s a big deal.”

The resort, which includes two golf courses known informally as “Ike” and “Babe,” now shares the award with other notable courses, such as Pebble Beach.

“And some consider that the best golf course in the world,” Youpa said.

Since 2006, Majestic Realty and Industry have invested nearly $60 million in renovating the 292-room hotel and golf courses.

Of that, more than $22 million was dedicated to overhauling the golf courses – replacing all the fairways, adjusting bunkers and redoing the pro shop, Semcken said.

“We wanted to give a public golfer the feel of a private golf club,” he said.

The Pacific Palms Resort and its facilities are master-leased by Majestic Realty, Roski and Semcken under a partnership called Majestic Industry Hills, LLC.

The lease lasts 65 years, said Industry Mayor Dave Perez.
Previous Industry Mayor Dave Winn brought Roski in as a co-owner after Winn grew tired of having the city lose money on the resort, Perez said.

“We’re a lot happier now that Roski has it,” he said.

The Northern Trust Open, formerly the L.A. Open, holds qualifying rounds at the Industry Hills courses.

On a recent morning, an Industry Hills regular, 50-year old Tim Tsai, played a round of golf on the shorter “Babe” course.

“They made it a lot easier for the general public,” said Tsai. “Before it was for the Tour guys.”
